A 19th-century French noir-patinated bronze equestrian sculpture of Bartolomeo Colleoni after the original by Andrea del Verrocchio, teacher of Leonardo da Vinci, made in Venice between 1480 and 1488. Colleoni (1395/1400-1475), was an enterprising soldier of hire of the Republic of Venice in the fifteenth century, and Verrocchio depicts him a stern-faced warrior on horseback a la the antique. “Verrocchio” is inscribed on the base of the statue, which is further marked “F. Barbedienne. Fondeur.”
